Methos

Kalas doesn't live here anymore!

Oops. I'm lying. He's alive and well, and he's seeking Methos. He uses up the Watcher Don Salzer in his quest, which lights a fire under Joe, who warns MacLeod. Mac doesn't believe in Methos, who is the legendary oldest Immortal, but he's willing to visit Watcher Adam Pierson and discuss the possibility. Well, knock me over with a tire iron! Adam Pierson is lounging about his apartment, tosses a can of beer to Mac, and says the Immortal words, "Hi, I'm Methos!" No. I'm lying again. He says "Me casa es su casa," in particularly languid tones, which Mac immediately interprets as, "Hi, I'm Methos!"

In a flashback, we're treated to a operatic performance by Kalas ... who for some unknowable reason is singing a duet alone. But not to worry! Duncan's young friend Carmen Campolo steps in to sing the soprano bits to great acclaim. Actually, it's a pretty poor performance by both of them, but we applaud madly anyways. Kalas decides to take his petty frustrations out on Carmen by strangling her. Duncan arrives in the nick of time and he and Kalas join in battle. Kalas' throat is slashed, destroying his tremendous voice and his life. Duncan is in trouble now!

Back to the present. Richie joins a professional motorcycle racing team, so we're able to watch endless circlings of a track by fellows on motorcycles. Methos fights Kalas, almost loses and makes an escape. Methos attacks Duncan, and when Duncan wins the fight, offers his head to Duncan. The logic here is that Methos can't beat Kalas. But the combined Duncan/Methos probably can beat Kalas, and regardless, Methos is going to die, so it might as well be under the sword of a Good Guy. Duncan refuses the gift of Methos' head, but challenges Kalas. Mid-battle, the police arrive to arrest Kalas for the murder of Salzer. Methos disappears, his final words to Mac being, "live, grow stronger; fight another day."

Questions:

1. Carmen Campolo tries to be seduced by Kalas, who really doesn't have an interest in seducing her. His single-minded pursuit of the destruction of Duncan MacLeod overrides all other considerations. Kalas is not the most balanced person you'd run into in a day. Perhaps, he needs a hobby. Describe a suitable hobby for Kalas and explain your choice.

2. Methos, the 5000-year-old man, seems to have made his peace with being the most Immortal of the Immortals. His hobby is being a Watcher. He lounges about, reading and writing. Should he be doing more with his life, or has he pretty much done his bit for humanity and gets to enjoy a way long retirement?

3. Can anyone think of a reason why Duncan, once he had slashed the throat of Kalas, did not chase him down and finish the job of beheading him? He had plenty of reason and no hint that Kalas would ever reform from his murderous ways.

4. If one thinks of Highlander as being an equation, which part does Richie's racing career fulfill in that equation? Is it a significant part of the equation or does its end result equal a null?

5. Do we buy Methos' logic that his Quickening combined with Duncan's fire and relative youth would form a force able to defeat Kalas? Have we seen much proof that a Quickening from another Immortal adds to a victorious Immortal's strength?

6. The hair and pants issues are overwhelmed by the appearance of the Dread Orange Jumpsuits on the race track. Comment upon their sartorial splendor or lack thereof.
